Train from Naples to Salerno

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most visited coastlines in Italy, and the lesser-known port city of Salerno is an important transport hub for travelers headed to the coast. Most tourists arrive in Salerno by train or cruise ship and continue north to the towns along the Amalfi Coast by ferry or bus.

The fastest direct trains travel from Naples to Salerno in just about half an hour, much less time than it would take to make the 37.5 mile (60 km) trip by car. Opt for the train to save you time and to avoid the stress of driving in Naples and around the coast.

Frequent Trains from Naples to Salerno

The high-speed train connect Naples’ Centrale station with Salerno throughout the day, including fast direct trains and slower trains which require a change. In total, there almost 40 trains a day from Naples to Salerno.

Ticket prices for the direct Regionale trains start at around $6, though tickets for the AV trains can cost up to $17.

There may be limited trains on weekends and holidays, and often longer travel times.

Amenities on Trains from Naples to Salerno

The Frecciarossa is the fastest AV train and has monitors listing travel information and news, air-conditioned cars, individual power outlets, 3g and 4g internet, wi-fi, and a café car. These trains have a number of classes with color-coded cars. Executive class is brown, and includes meal service and a station lounge. Business and Premium classes are blue and red, offering its passengers a snack, drink, and choice of newspaper. Standard class is orange, and has snack and drink service.

Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Intercity trains are lower-tier AV trains. They are slower and offer fewer amenities than the Frecciarossa. These trains have air-conditioned 1st and 2nd class cars, individual power outlets, and either trolley service and/or a café car. First-class tickets include a free drink and newspaper.

Regionale trains may include both 1st and 2nd class cars, or only 2nd class. Passengers do not have reserved seats, so you can sit in any available spot in the appropriate class car. Regionale trains do not offer food service or a café car, and the air­ conditioning and power sockets may not always be functional.

Naples and Salerno Train Stations

Napoli Centrale is Naples' biggest station on Piazza Garibaldi, which is a main hub for city and regional buses. There's also a Metro (subway) station connected to the Centrale station called Napoli Piazza Garibaldi.

The Salerno station is relatively small, with only five platforms. There is a bus terminal outside for city buses to Salerno’s Manfredi port where ferries to the Amalfi Coast depart, and regional buses directly to the Amalfi Coast. Ferries to Amalfi and Positano also depart from Salerno’s Concordia port, located directly across from the train station.
