Cosmopolitan Milan may not seem like it has much in common with Naples, but both are famous for authentic Italian fashion and Neapolitan pizza. In fact, the gorgeous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele I in Milan was the inspiration for the Galleria Umberto I in Naples. Whether you're going to Naples to do more shopping, to stuff yourself with pizza, or to visit nearby sights, one thing is clear—the best way to get there is by train.

The train journey from Milan to Naples isn't short, on average Italy's high-speed trains cover the 481 miles (775 km) in about 4.5 hours, but driving would take you at least 8 hours, not counting stops for food, or fuel, or sightseeing. Relax on the train trip and save yourself the hassle of driving.
 

Frequent Trains from Milan to Naples

High-speed Alta Velocità (AV) trains leave Milan's Centrale station headed for Naples' Centrale station 1-2 times per hour during most of the weekdays, for a grand total of 55 trains making the trip each day. The first leaves Milan at 6:08 a.m., the last at 7:30 p.m., and the fastest trains make the journey in 4 hours and 15 minutes.

There are some slower trains making the connection, though these can take more than eight hours even without needing to change trains along the way. Ticket prices on this route range from $44-157.

Italo's trains also connect Milano Centrale with Napoli Centrale. These trains offer direct service too, and the trip takes between 4 hours and 5 hours. There are 19 Italo trains making this trip on most days.

Note that weekends and holidays typically mean less frequent service and sometimes longer travel times.

Direct Trains from Milan to Naples

Most of the trains from Milan to Naples are direct trains, so although many will make stops along the way, passengers won't need to change trains. Some of the Italo trains are express trains that barrel straight through until they get to Naples without making any stops. When you're booking your tickets, pay attention to any connection information to make sure you know whether you need to change trains or not.

Amenities on Trains from Milan to Naples

The top of the line AV trains are Frecciarossa, and these train cars are all equipped with air conditioning and power outlets in your seat for your convenience. There are both 1st-class and 2nd-class cars. First class passengers get a free drink and a choice of newspaper. A cafe car is available to all passengers. 

Milan and Naples Train Stations

Milan's main station, Centrale, is also a local transportation hub with buses and trams stopping outside, and a Metro (subway) stop in a lower level of the station itself. This makes it very easy to get to and from Milano Centrale.

Napoli Centrale is Naples' biggest station, and it's located on Piazza Garibaldi which is a main hub for city and regional buses. There's also a Metro (subway) station connected to Napoli Centrale called Napoli Piazza Garibaldi. Make sure to be prepared ahead of time, so that you know where you are going once outside of the station, or which bus or taxi to take.
