Luggage on Trains in Italy

It’s the responsibility of the passenger in Italy to carry and place their luggage in baggage racks on trains — yet more incentive to pack light and take a carry-on. But if you really can’t be bothered, there are services available to help with baggage.

Carry-on Baggage on Trains

There’s no weight limitation on baggage for Italian trains (except on a select few such as Eurostar). Trains have either overhead storage racks, storage room behind the back of the seat, and/or in luggage areas at end of the car. Note: Baggage kept by the passenger and placed in the baggage racks remains the sole responsibility of the passenger. The railroads assume no responsibility in case of loss or theft. So keep an eye on baggage you put back there.

Station Storage

Most stations provide storage-rooms or at least lockers for baggage storage, and many stations have luggage carts.

Trenitalia Offers Luggage Transport for Frecciarossa Customers

The luggage transport service available at some Frecciarossa stations allows customers to book the aid of a station porter for a given time to assist with baggage. When porters are available, they can be easily recognized by their uniform or official badge. The stations that supply this service are Roma Termini, Florence S.M.N., Bologna Centrale and Milano Centrale.

You can use the luggage assistance service simply by Calling the Trenitalia Call Center in Italy on 89.20.21 (fee paying number) up to 8 pm of the day before departure. When booking, you must give the operator details about your journey and the PNR code on your ticket; then you can coordinate over time and the place for meeting the porter. The service cost is 5 euros, which must be paid to the service porter on the spot.

Checking Baggage on Trains

Excess baggage or bulky pieces must be carried in a baggage car and checked before departure. Taking a backpack with you is recommended so you can have valuables and essentials on the train.

If you really don’t want to worry about your luggage, the new door-to-door luggage service provided by TNT in collaboration with Trenitalia for all Frecciarossa and Frecciargento travellers and CartaFreccia card holders is fabulous. The luggage transport services makes baggage issues non-existent because you don’t have to carry it yourself, you’re sending it. You can send your bag from €20 and if you’re traveling with a group, they have great group travel promotions.

This service is easy to use and is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 19:00. It’s available in major cities on Saturday and Sunday (Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Salerno, Venice, Bari) and different charges apply. To book or for further information call TNT at FreePhone 800.923.924 or visit the TNT website.
