Experience the Jubilee of Mercy in Italy

Pope Francis I has declared a Jubilee Year, which will flood Rome with even more visitors than usual—both religious pilgrims and the curious alike.

Boniface VIII instituted the first Jubilee in 1300 so pilgrims could make the rounds of Rome's great basilicas and cleanse their souls of sin—history's first great tourism campaign. Jubilees usually take place every 25 or 50 years. The last was in 2000, but Pope Francis I decided to call another one early to emphasize the Christian concept of mercy.

The Jubilee of Mercy will begin with the opening of St. Peter's Holy Door on Dec. 8, 2015, and end with its closing on Nov. 20, 2016. Every pilgrim makes an effort to pass through these doors—or the "Doors of Mercy" on any of six other specified Rome churches—to earn their plenary indulgence. (Wild oversimplification: An indulgence is a parole for your soul, knocking time off the period you spend in purgatory paying for your confessed sins.)
